The Week Before Chinese New Year

Another busy week!  Park day on Monday, spent all day at the doctor/hospital/pharmacy on Wednesday, Thursday morning at Shriners (Katie saw her hand doc for a post surgical recheck), and art class Friday morning.  Whew!

Somehow we still managed to get almost all our schoolwork for the week done!

My boys never bothered to learn how to tell time, since there are so many digital options, and I recently decided we needed to remedy that.  I got them workbooks, and we've been working through them.  I asked Jack what time it was, and he immediately hopped up on the table to more accurately calculate the minutes.  Pretty sure he wouldn't get away with that in a typical classroom.

The girls spent some time finishing up a project from their art class.

It involved cutting, and this was Katie's first time using scissors.  With her hand differences, she had a very hard time.  I ordered her some adaptive scissors to try out.  We'll see how that works.

The finished product, a flower box.

Eli's been building lots of creations with the K'nex he got for Christmas.

So I thought it was time to pull out the "educational" K'nex set I'd stashed away.

He's really enjoying Intro to Simple Machines: Wheels, Axels and Inclined Planes.

Progress continues to happen with the new room.

It's almost ready to paint.

And this appears to be from Monday at the park.  Lovely selfie.

This was Katie's piece from this week's art class.

The boys are still working on their chess skills.  Also, this week, we learned more about castle life, so we set up the castle blocks and the boys drew castles while I read to them.

Another art project this week comes from last year's ARTistic Pursuits book.  The lesson on Art in Castles talked about tapestry, and we used oil pastels on fabric to tell a story.  Jack's picture above is from the Garden of Eden.  You can see the serpent on the left, and the tree, and the flaming sword on the right.

Eli's picture depicts a neat story I didn't know.  It's 2 fighter planes in WW2.  One tried to shoot down the other but couldn't, so he pulled along side him and saluted before flying away.

In addition to castles, we read about cathedrals, learning that stained glass windows were originally used in many churches to tell stories to the illiterate population to help them understand the Bible.  I pulled out the stained glass kits and the boys made these pretty sun catchers.

This coming week looks a little more calm, schedule wise.  We'll finish up a couple more things from last week, and then we'll get into the Crusades and Robin Hood.

    1. I was really pleased with how they turned out. The boys did say you had to be careful when you placed the pieces, because the adhesive is really strong, so you can't just pull it off and restick it easily.

    1. Why thank you! :) Sometimes it feels like total chaos, lol, but sometimes we get a lot accomplished.

  3. My daughter used the adaptive scissors and they helped. I then found another pair that were a step between. Now she is using regular scissors. Kumon cutting books are good. What are you using for chess? That looks like it might be interesting.

    1. I'm glad to hear the adaptive scissors 1) worked, and 2) were a stepping stone for your child. :) I'm hoping as Katie's hands get larger, she'll be able to use regular scissors at some point.

I mentioned our chess book here: http://grtlyblesd.blogspot.com/2015/01/our-short-but-full-week.html
