The Bachelor Girl's Guide to Murder book review and #giveaway

Imagine with me for a moment...  What if Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson had been girls?  Set in the early 20th century, in a Toronto full of immigrants and intrigue, The Bachelor Girl's Guide to Murder is a feminist version of the famous crime solving duo.

If you're familiar with Amelia Peabody (a character created by Elizabeth Peters) Merinda Herringford is a woman cut from the same cloth.  Fancying herself a Holmes, she gets her Watson, the more demure Jemima Watts, into hot water without intending to, as they dash about the city after dark, disguised as men.

Merinda pretends to be ignorant of constable Jasper Forth's affection for her, but she uses it to her advantage when she needs him to help her find out who's behind the recent murders in town.  Jem is much more open about her feelings for newspaper columnist Ray DeLuca, but Ray keeps her at arm's length, hurting her feelings.

I enjoyed The Bachelor Girl's Guide to Murder, by Rachel McMillan, and was happy to discover that Merinda and Jem also appear in A Lesson in Love and Murder, coming this fall.  They're also featured in Kindle novella set at Christmas time, A Singular and Whimsical Problem.

Meet best friends and flatmates Merinda and Jem, who launch their own Sherlock Holmes-esque consulting detective business in 1910 Toronto in Rachel McMillan’s The Bachelor Girl’s Guide to Murder. The deaths of young Irish women lead Merinda and Jem deeper into the mire of the city’s underbelly. Merinda could well be Toronto’s premiere consulting detective, and Jem may just find a way to put her bachelor girlhood behind her forever–if they can stay alive long enough to do so.
